Last week classrooms had a special lunch to celebrate Thanksgiving. Staff and students had a great time celebrating together.
4th graders brainstormed ways they could contribute to their classroom. They came up with nine leadership roles and decided that one student will fulfill each role every week. They are going to write job descriptions and apply for the role they want first.
Earlier this week a letter was sent home with students explaining the Measurable Results Assessment (MRA), a survey and reporting system designed to provide insights into the progress of our school. You can also find this letter on our website. Please use the following link to fill out the MRA Family Survey: https://www.leaderinme.com/s/hillsdale-preparatory-school/families

Hillsdale Prep students want to give a huge thank you to Kimm Burger from the KB Law Office for donating funds to purchase each student a book for their home library. Last week the books were passed out to students and each class took a picture to show off the book they received. Thank you Kimm for encouraging students to read at home.
Billy earned a Patriot Prize last week for Cooperation. Mrs. Comstock gave him the award for listening, keeping his classmates on task and always following directions the first time he is asked. Awesome job Billy!
Mrs. Medrano, Miss Taylor and Mrs. Frank's class have begun doing a weekly sign language class. Mrs. Frank has students that only communicate using sign language. Students have learned to sign swing, yes, no, thank you, stop and all done. Students are excited to continue learning to communicate with all of their friends.
During the month of October the Leader in Me habit students focused on was being proactive. Mrs. Medrano's class did this by using terms like "Stop, Think and Make a Good Choice" to be proactive with their actions. They were also proactive by working on strategies to stay calm when things get upsetting like taking a break, walking away and remembering they only have control of themselves when problem solving.
Congratulations to this weeks Patriot Prize winners. These students demonstrated the pillar of the month: Cooperation
Students have been working on partner reading. These 4th grade students shared that partner reading allows them to follow along, offer help, be supportive and encourage their partner.
"Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off." - Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Pillar of the Month for November is Cooperation. Keep an eye out as we highlight students demonstrating cooperation all month long.
In Science the 4th grade students made predictions of which type of liquid would make candy corn dissolve the fastest. They tested water, alcohol and vinegar. Students made some great observations and even discussed other liquids they could try. The class was shocked that the candy corn dissolved the fastest in water.
Hillsdale Preparatory School is a Leader in Me School, but what does that mean? Leader in Me is about empowering our students to reach their full potential while ultimately finding their voice. Over the coming months every week we will have a day where we share ways students are being proactive and leading with the end in mind. We will show ways our staff is advancing into classroom leadership instead of classroom management and how they are helping others see what they don't see in themselves. We are excited you are on this journey with us and can't wait to share the ways Leader in Me helps each child grow throughout the year.
